The importance of this vaccine is seen in the fact that it protects against the Feline Leukemia Virus (FeLV): one of the major causes of terminal immune suppression in cats and three other very contagious infectious agents, as well. FeLV reduces immunity, thus it makes a cat more susceptible to severe infections. So, when you vaccinate your cat with TruFel HCP+FeLV, you give him/her strong immunization and significantly reduce the risk of being affected by fatal diseases.
Kittens should start at eight to nine weeks with their first dose followed by boosters given 3 to 4 weeks later. After the initial series, a booster is recommended one year later with revaccination every one to three years based on risk factors. Always consult with your veterinarian to determine the best vaccination schedule according to your cat's lifestyle.
What is the protection provided by the TruFel HCP+FeLV vaccine?
This vaccine protects against four of the most dangerous and contagious feline diseases:
How soon should I have my cat vaccinated?
Kittens will receive their first shot as early as 8-9 weeks of age, followed by a booster 3-4 weeks later. Adult cats should receive an annual booster if at risk of possible exposure to FeLV.
How do we give the TruFel HCP+FeLV vaccine?
The vaccine is given to the cat by a licensed veterinarian subcutaneously (that is, just under the skin).
Would my cat need a booster shot?
Yes. A booster shot must be given 3-4 weeks after the initial dose, which will have to be repeated annually, especially for outdoor cats or cats in multi-pet households.
What are the side effects?
Most cats, if they happen to have any side effects, will have mild ones, including a little temporary soreness at the injection site, a slight rise in temperature, or lethargy. Severe reactions (like vomiting, swelling of the face, or difficulty breathing) are rare and need immediate veterinary attention.
Does this vaccine matter for indoor cats?
Indoor cats have a low risk for infection if they have never been exposed to FeLV-positive cats; vaccination, however, is strongly recommended for kittens, cats living in multi-cat households, or those with potential exposure to the outdoors or to FeLV-positive cats.
